Full Description
29 September 1996.
Just west of the westernmost beach hut, in a tidal channel running east to west, and largely covered by sand. Several lines of wattle hurdles, said by [1] to be associated with 19th century sea defences.
See letter in file.
See 1970 1:2500 Ordnance Survey aerial photograph (copy in file) showing a fairly extensive structure.
D. Gurney (NLA), October 1996.
1952. RAF air photography.
Suggest this is a post World War Two attempt to stabilise the coast.
A. Miller (Suffolk County Council NMP)
D. Gurney (NLA), 13 February 2002.
2000. Field Observation and Desk-based Assessment.
Site considered as part of archaeological assessment of Holkham Estate.
Stakes and lines of faggots, about 30m from the base of the dunes, now buried. Suggestion from informant that these are post-WWII and were set down to encourage growth of dunes.
See report (S1) for further details.
P. Watkins (HES), 28 April 2015.
