Full Description
Line of 17 or 18 anti-tank blocks, built 1940/41 on continuous concrete base. Blocks are about 3 feet (1m) in height and some are numbered. [1]
Survey No. B2-3 (S1).
D. Walker (NLA), July 1996.
August 2001. Norfolk NMP.
To the north of the site are two linear concrete structures with anti-tank cubes set along their length. The western structure (TF 6491 3341 to 6500 3345) is aligned in a south-west to north-east direction and has a length of 100m. There are a minimum of 23 anti-tank cubes set within the feature. To the immediate south of the structure are four rectangular buildings. The eastern structure (TF 6505 3348 6514 3354) is also aligned in a southwest to northeast direction and has a length of 108m. There are a minimum of 24 anti-tank cubes set within the feature. There are three rectangular buildings to the immediate south of this structure. Curiously there is a 55m wide area between the two structures that has no apparent defences. These are likely to be the features recorded by M. Osborne in September 1994. However, the grid reference provided (TF 6510 3333 to 6517 3341) places the structure 115m southwest from its position recorded by aerial photograph rectification. There is no trace of a tank trap at that location and it has surely been mistakenly referenced.
Within the remains of the area, to the south of the anti-tank cubes, are numerous rectangular buildings and two concrete platforms that probably held buildings, possibly acting as checkpoints along the roadside. The features appear to be defending the southeastern approach to the US Air Force Air Gunners school (Iossen, 1990 (S1)) recorded as site NHER 23145, and indeed is probably part of the same complex. Alternatively they may be defending the approach from the northwest, from the direction of the gunnery school.
M. Brennand (NMP), 3 August 2001.
