An extant World War Two pillbox is visible on contemporary and later aerial photographs (S3 to S6). This pillbox is located at TG 51775 12675 on the west side of the cemetery on Ormesby Road at Caister on Sea.
Although previously recorded as a possible type 26 pillbox, the aerial photographs show that it has an asymmetrical hexagonal plan and is actually a type 24 pillbox. It was positioned at the western end of a footpath between the two parts of the cemetery. It faced towards the northwest across open fields and the northern part of the cemetery. This was one of a pair of type 24 pillboxes positioned on the north side of Caister to defend the Ormesby Road approach into the village. The other pillbox, which has been demolished, was located 180m to the northeast (NHER 32673).
The earliest aerial photographs showing the pillbox at the corner of the cemetery date to May 1944 (S3). However, it is probable that, like the pillbox to the northeast (NHER 32673), it was constructed some time shortly after February 1941. This pillbox had soil and grass on its roof to provide it with some camouflage (S3 to S6).
J. Albone (NMP), 27 July 2005.
