Full Description
May 1997. Visit.
Broome Cottage, oldest part in northwest part of building is possibly late 17th century.
Owners have found the following in Brooke Beck, stream at southeast end of property:
Millstone made of millstone grit. See sketches (S1) and (S2).
Lumps of limestone (oolitic and others).
Large chunk of hard ceramic with brick adhering, which is probably a piece of brick kiln lining.
On surface of garden in central part of property:
Three medieval unglazed sherds (quite fresh and large, one jar rim, base and body sherd), Glazed Red Earthenware sherd and lava quern fragment.
During building works in northwest corner two pits containing many horn cores.
(S3) show property was a tannery by 1750. Owners point out that the east boundary of parcel is very deep and on dredging had no visible base. Also earthwork ditch (? former Beck course) visible on south side of Beck (not closely examined).
(S4) in file.
A. Rogerson (NLA), 30 May 1997.
See (S5)-(S7) regarding millstone in file.
