Full Description
The present building gives the impression of a large 18th century building with a smaller addition. However the latter had date plaque in east wall of 1647 and three slit windows, blocked below (now covered over). [1] suggests this may have been one house of 1647, and only partly rebuilt as an inn after change of ownership. Possibly one of the houses rebuilt by the Burgesses after being destroyed in a sally during the Seige of Lynn. Locally said to stand on the site of a mill.
Outbuildings used as theatre for touring players in 18th century.

Examination of building before demolition confirms [1]'s theory.
1647 building sub-divided in the 18th century when the central section was rebuilt as inn; original stack, which has reused block of limestone, demolished. Building heightened in the 19th century and altered again in 1938.

Eastern cell of building left standing when remainder demolished, interior recorded.
See extended report in file.

To the west of the main building was a two-storey structure containing a large room used by travelling players in the early 19th century. This was partially demolished in 1937 and converted to a single storey.
(S2) suggests that this was a licenced premises from 1789 onwards.
