Carolingians, Charlemagne, class 3, c. 793/4-812, denier, Mainz, Gariel XIII, 206, MG 92 MEC I.741.
Obverse reads: +CARL(part of V)[...]RF - KAROLVS-monogram.
Reverse reads: [...](part of G)ONTIA - cross.
Weight 0.97g (incomplete), die-axis 3h30, chipped, broken, repaired.
The similarity in style with the Charlemagne/Mainz denier illustrated MG plate IV, 93 confirms the attribution of this coin to Mainz (square A on the obv. and wide G and N on the rev.). Note the inversion of the letters FR on the obv.
