Summary

Metal detecting in 1995 recovered a rare piece of gold ring money. Subsequent fieldwalking in 2005 noted several potentially prehistoric burnt flint scatters. Other material recovered included Mesolithic and Neolithic/Bronze Age worked flints and what were identified by the finder as Iron Age, Middle Saxon, Late Saxon/medieval and medieval pottery sherds.

1 Bronze Age/Iron Age gold ring money. See drawing (S1).

May 2005. Fieldwalking. Site extended to whole field [2].
Survey focused on eastern half of site, which was previously a separate field.
Identified at Context 2 (finder's Site 1):
?Prehistoric burnt flint scatter.

Identified at Context 3 (finder's Site 2):
?Prehistoric burnt flint scatter.

Identified at Context 4 (finder's Site 3):
?Prehistoric burnt flint scatter.

Found at Context 5 (finder's Site 4):
13 Iron Age pottery sherds (flint gritted).
The Iron Age sherds at this location are probably a continuation of a scatter observed at the southern end of the field to the north (NHER 61634 Context 2).

Found at Context 6 (finder's Site 5):
10 Iron Age pottery sherds (flint gritted).
The Iron Age sherds at this location are probably a continuation of a scatter previously observed in the field to the south (NHER 34985 Context 12).

Found at Context 7 (finder's Site 6):
4 Middle Saxon pottery sherds.
4 medieval pottery sherds.

Scattered finds from across the area examined included:
15 Neolithic/Bronze Age worked flints ("scrapers, blades etc.").
77 Late Saxon/medieval pottery sherds.
1 undated lava quern fragment, 1 animal tooth and 1 oyster shell.

Survey at western end of site, in area that was previously a separate field.
Found at Context 8 (finder's Site 3):
Iron Age pottery sherds [4].

Identified at Context 9 (finder's Site 4):
?Prehistoric burnt flint scatter.
Other prehistoric finds recovered in this area included 7 Neolithic/Bronze Age flint tools.

Found at Context 10 (finder's Site 5):
1 Late Saxon pottery sherd.
32 medieval pottery sherds.
1 undated iron slag fragment.

May 2006. Fieldwalking.
Found in north-east corner of field, in area of Contexts 4, 5 and 7 (finder's Site 1):
11 prehistoric worked flints. Probably mostly Neolithic/Bronze Age, although it is noted that this assemblage also included some Mesolithic microliths.
53 Iron Age pottery sherds.

Found in north-east corner of field, in area of Contexts 5 and 7 (finder's Site 2):
47 Middle Saxon and Late Saxon/medieval pottery sherds.
1 lava quern fragment.
