Summary

An evaluation in advance of development revealed the remains of an earthen artillery bank behind the defences of the town wall (see NHER 4294). The bank was built in two phases in the 16th and 17th centuries. Medieval and post medieval finds were made. Part of the town wall concealed by the bank was exposed but was not recorded.

Evaluation excavation at 13/15 Market Gates in advance of development.
Revealed remains of the earthen artillery bank behind the defences (see NHER 4294) in two phases, 16th and 17th century, with part of cobbled surface. Various post medieval finds of pottery, metalwork etc. and also medieval pottery, floor tile, roofing tile, jettons which are presumably residual.

May 1998.
The further work on site was found to have been carried out by the builders without informing NAU. Consequently the only further material noted by NAU was more post medieval sherds. Part of town wall said to have been exposed.
