Summary

Aerial photography shows the cropmarks of a rather enigmatic semi-circular feature. A map of 1841 shows there was a large pond in the area at the time, and it may be that the feature was a boundary bank to a mere or decoy pond.

Map

1946. RAF air photograph.
Part of a semi-circular cropmark of probable ditch and flanking banks to southwest of Limers Common. A change of vegetation in northwest of common suggests a continuation as a curving earthwork.

1982. Cambridge University Committee for Aerial Photography air photograph.
Cropmark shows to west and south of common as a broader pale mark, no ditch.

1997. Visit indicates a shallow inward-facing scarp ofabout 0.4m on the line of air photograph feature in the arable land, which is gravelly but with a peatier character on the lower level.
In the northwest of the common, a 10m wide ridge, up to 0.4m high continues the line, with irregular but adjacent depressions to the north, the whole gradually petering out to the east.
There is no convincing evidence for a complete circular feature on the eastern part of the common. A short length of bank in the southeast looks too narrow to be a similar form.
The Tithe Map of 1841 (Norfolk Records Office MF 752) shows the field boundaries as now but a large pond within the common, of which only slight remnants remain as depressions.
This rather enigmatic incomplete circular feature may have been a boundary bank to a former mere or decoy as it looks too regular on the RAF air photographs to be convincingly natural. Equally, if natural more variation in soil types might be expected.
No fieldwalking finds on arable land.
B. Cushion (NLA), 19 January 1998.
