Full Description
House listed grade II; garden noted by (S1) as an important example of Arts and Crafts style, though they do not grade it.
(S2) dates house to 1913 to 1914 in 16th century style possibly by E. Boardman; very detailed description of interior and exterior given. However (S1) points out that the plan of the building is identical to that on the 1906 map, except for small west and southwest extensions, and that the 1906 building was there in 1886, which could still be a suitable date for Boardman. A house on (S3) was a rectory. They suggest house was only extended in 1913 by Commander D. King who laid out the garden. The outline of the rectory garden is still apparent but the main layout is 20th century. See the (S1) for detailed description.
E. Rose (NLA), 31 March 1998.
A rectory is marked here on (S3) published in 1797. A new house was built in the grounds in 1886. This new house and gardens were extended between 1906 and 1928, perhaps by Edward Boardman. A lodge was also built at this time. The house was used as a hospital during World War One and is now an old peoples' home. The gardens are an excellent example of 'Arts and Crafts' style.
See (S1).
M. Dennis (NLA), 27 July 2006.
