Summary

A post medieval to modern boundary bank, depicted on an early 20th century map, has been identified as an earthwork during a site survey, and is also visible on imagery from a 2015 lidar survey. It surrounds an area named 'New Plantation' on the map, and shown under partial woodland cover. To the east and south the area is bounded by a drain and the Little Ouse river. It has been suggested as the site of a meadow noted in a survey of 1649. In 1998 a Mesolithic microlith was recovered from the bank (NHER 59554).

Map

May 1998. Earthwork survey.
Forestry Compartments High Lodge East 5040 and 5051, New Plantation:
A linear earthwork bank that curved around for 700m, enclosing an area of gravel terrace and valley bottom peat fen alongside the Little Ouse River. The enclosed area is larger than 7 hectares. Part of the bank has been destroyed, leaving a sand mark. A Mesolithic microlith was recovered from one of the places where the bank had been removed (now recorded under NHER 59554).
A small mound is located at the southern end of the bank. It is 5 metres in diameter and rises to up to 1.2 metres high.
This feature is suggested to be the boundary of Shoringe's Meadow, an area of meadow noted in a survey of 1649 (S1). The mound is enigmatic, and may be modern.
See report (S2) for further details.
(But note also that the area inside the bank is marked New Plantation on the modern Ordnance Survey map - E. Rose (NLA).)
E. Rose (NLA), 29 May 1998.

June 2001.
The area inside the bank, i.e. to the southwest, marked New Plantation on the map, looks very like a barrow when seen from the southeast; but this is probably an illusion due to a detached hill spur.
E. Rose (NLA), 24 July 2001.

December 2017. 'Brecks from Above' and Breckland National Mapping Programme.
The boundary bank described above is visible as an earthwork on imagery from a recent lidar survey (S3). It is depicted on the Ordnance Survey 2nd edition 25 inch map (S4), indicating a post medieval to modern date. As it is depicted on a readily available historic map, it has not been mapped by the project. The possible mound has the appearance of a modern feature and has also not been mapped.
S. Tremlett (Norfolk Historic Environment Service), 21st December 2017.
