Map

June 1946.
(S1) shows ditched enclosure extending onto salt marsh.

June 1998. Visit.
Enclosure still extant with ditch and outer bank up to 0.5m high and spread up to 3m, and more pronounced in west and east. Area enclosed is part salt marsh in north, but also has a gravelly promontory extending from arable to south. Creek to east extends south as an embayment into upland, possibly relevant to enclosure. Rather enigmatic in function but probably post medieval.
B.Cushion (NLA), 11 June 1998.

October 2002. Norfolk NMP.
The earthworks of a group of post-medieval embankments and drainage ditches are visible on aerial photographs on edge of saltmarsh at Morston (S2). The site consists of an embanked enclosure and linear bank, which are likely to be part of the post-medieval enclosure and drainage of the saltmarsh. The rectangular area to the south of the sea bank may have acted as a stock enclosure.
The earthworks of fragmentary earthwork bank visible on Ordnance Survey aerial photographs (S2), running from TF 9925 4430 to TF 9956 4430 for approximately 320m. It varies in width from 3m to 6.5m. A ditch flanks the south of this bank and a partial ditch can be seen to the north only at the eastern end. Two perpendicular banks can be seen conjoined to this bank to the south, which form a rectangular enclosed area approximately 140m by 95m. Two areas of extraction can be seen one centred on TF 9923 4430 and another at TF 9944 4420. The one to the west appears to follow the line of the earthwork bank and may be related to its construction.
S. Massey (NMP), 4 November 2002.

May-November 2004. Norfolk Rapid Coastal Zone Archaeological Survey.
Inter-tidal survey (Environmental Zone 11), Context 960:
A bank, four north to south ditches and one east to west ditch were found in an area of saltmarsh measuring 60m by 65m (between TF 99400 44278 to TF 99455 44218). The bank at the centre of the site was a former field boundary - it was on exactly the same orientation as an existing one in fields to the south. The ditches were probably dug to aid drainage.
See assessment report (S3) for further details.
The associated archive has been deposited with the Norwich Castle Museum (NWHCM : 2017.421).
J. Allen (NLA), 20 April 2005. Amended by P. Watkins (HES), 21 July 2019.

The enclosure is not shown on the Morston tithe map (S4) nor on the 1st edition 1 inch Ordnance Survey map (S5). On both maps the area of the enclosure is shown as part of the salt marsh.
D. Robertson (NLA), 27 June 2006.
