April 2022. Geophysical Survey.
Ground penetrating radar survey for Campinglands Community Archaeology Project, the aim of which was to provide targets for subsequent archaeological investigation.
This survey identified extensive structural remains in the southern half of the site that correspond with the known site of the demolished early 18th-century school building. The anomalies present appear to represent both external and internal walls, as well as areas of disturbed ground and rubble that presumably resulted from the building's demolition. Old footpaths visible on historic maps were also identified.
Although a number of anomalies of uncertain origin were recorded to the north of the remains of the school, none are necessarily of archaeological interest. They most likely represent areas of recently-disturbed ground, possible structural elements, tree roots, rubble, landscaping and other modern features. Modern services were also identified.
See report (S2) for further details.
P. Watkins (HES), 28 April 2024.
