Full Description
March to April 1998. Watching brief.
Observation of Tunstead to Stalham water main.
Recorded a layer of heat-affected flint fragments associated with a quantity of ash, located within a layer of grey clay mud overlain by a thick layer of peat. The depth at which they were found indicates that they may be of prehistoric date.
A large piece of timber was removed from the upper layers of the peat, which also yielded a portion of a wooden pickaxe handle and fragments of modern brick. These items are believed to be associated with relatively recent riverbank works.
No other finds were recovered during monitoring of the 8.5km pipeline.
See report (S1) for further details.
E. Rose (NLA) 5 August 1998. Amended H. Hamilton (HES), 06 March 2014.
