Full Description
Exceptionally early and important hall house retaining crownpost roof, smoke blackening, evidence of possible garderobe and dais; hearth found under floor.
First floors above end bays. Parallels suggest early 14th century. Some wall painting.
Stack, hall floor and part attic inserted probably in late 17th century.
Later remodelling includes good Regency details.
See full report (S1) in file. Photographs (S2) in file. Work also noted in (S3).
E.Rose (NLA), 15 September 1998.
June 1999. Building Survey.
Historic building assessment prior to proposed repair of the building.
The building is constructed from an oak timber frame and contains the remains of a crown post roof. A later chimney stack has been inserted to the west of the parlour/hall dividing wall.
See report (S4) for further details
S. Howard (NLA), 12 January 2010. Amended by P. Watkins (HES), 15 April 2015.
January 2001. Excavation.
Within medieval hall house to investigate central hearth. Contexts 1-17 used.
Hearth itself lost by time of excavation.
Medieval pottery and small amount of animal bone was recovered from underlying material.
See report (S5) for further details. The results of this work are also summarised in (S6).
J. Allen (NLA), 12 February 2002. Amended by P. Watkins (HES), 14 April 2015.
In addition to the house, a timber framed barn probably of 17th/18th century date was noted during the above survey. Proposals submitted in 2005 refer to a 'hovel' which was not seen by the writer; the drawings submitted suggest this also is an 18th century timber framed structure.
(S7) in file.
E. Rose (NLA), 5 January 2006.
2008.
Alterations to the barn windows have been planned in order to allow for a fire escape.
See (S8) for further details.
H. Hamilton (NLA), 11 June 2008.
