Map

August 1998. Metal detecting find.
Roman brooch. Dolphin with foot missing; rather worn wings curved in section, open at back for (missing) spring and decorated on the front with bands of ribbing separated by broad grooves. Rear-facing hook is now missing. The bow has a groove down either side and a band of ribbing between two grooves down the centre. The break at the bottom is very neat and smooth, and the brooch might look complete were it not for the fact that it is rather short and there is no catchplate. 1st century AD in date.
A polaroid photograph is held by NCM.
A.Rogerson (NLA) 4 October 1998.
