Map

February 1946. RAF aerial photography.
Sinuous linear depression with incomplete rectangular and circular cropmarks (in grass) to east. Depression is a hollow way about 15m wide, continuing the gently curving line of hedge to north and south. Other features could be modern.

October 1998.
Field under arable cultivation with sweetcorn - no obvious hollow way.
B. Cushion (NLA) 3 November 1998.

The presence of this hollow way raises interesting questions regarding the original end of Bunns Bank (NHER 9206).
E. Rose (NLA) 5 November 1998.

May 2012. Norfolk NMP.
Earthworks as described above are visible on aerial photographs (S1-S4). The hollow way is visible to the east, running from TM 0542 9368 to TM 0533 9350, and measures up to approximately 12m in width. A parallel ditch earthwork is also visible in the field to the east, at TM 0549 9363, and, although this may be unrelated, it is possible that it relates to medieval land division.
To the south, centred on TM 0539 9352, are two possible circular banks, and at least two rectangular platforms, surrounded by ditches. These features may be modern, as suggested above, but it is also possible that they represent medieval to post medieval land division or even house platforms or tofts.
E. Bales (NMP), 30th May 2012.

February-March 2022. Geophysical Survey.
Magnetometer survey of proposed development areas.
The survey of the western field identified two parallel north-north-east to south-south-west aligned anomalies that appear to coincide with the probable hollow way. None of the other features in this group had associated geophysical anomalies.
See report (S5) and NHERs 55760 and 65438 for further details.
P. Watkins (HES), 28 October 2024.

March-July 2023. Trial Trenching.
Evaluation of proposed development area.
North-north-east to south-south-west aligned ditches recorded in several trenches in the western field were probably associated with the hollow way. These ditches produced later Iron Age and Roman pottery, although this could well have been residual. It is potentially notable that one of only two features to produce medieval pottery was a ditch running perpendicular to the line of this hollow way. There was no evidence for surviving sub-surface remains associated with other features mapped in the south-east corner of this field.
The trenching in the eastern field encountered a pair of intercutting north-north-east to south-south-west aligned ditches that were probably associated with the single cropmark recorded in this field. These produced no dating evidence.
See report (S6) and NHERs 55760 and 65438 for further details.
P. Watkins (HES), 28 October 2024.
