Summary

An almost complete medieval pot of Blackborough End-type. The pot was found in 1940 during the construction of an air raid shelter and was previously been incorrectly identified as dating to the Beaker or the Middle Saxon period.

1940. Stray Find.
Found at Blackborough End, whilst making air-raid shelter in cottage garden:
Small round-bottomed handmade pot 2 3/4" [6.9cm] high, 3" [7.6m] diameter. Hard paste light brown colour. See drawing (S1) and photograph (S2).
Donated to Norwich Castle Museum (NWHCM : 1957.405). Associated pottery lost.
Suggested as Middle Saxon by R.R. Clarke (NCM).

1979.
Pot re-examined by K. Wade (NAU) and S. Dunmore (NAU), who say it is not Middle Saxon but were unable to date it.
Grid reference corrected by finder and shown to R. Silvester (NAU) November 1982.
Finder insists he was told by "an archaeologist from Norwich Museum" that the pot was of Beaker date. But this is impossible - F. Healy (NAU).

1992.
Pot in NCM is certainly medieval, a diminiative version of Blackborough End-type round based, everted rim cooking pot/jar.
