Summary

This is the site of a Late Saxon and medieval pottery works. Kiln waste and pottery was found on the site in the 1960s. One of the kilns was excavated in 1963, and pottery dating to the 11th and 12th centuries was recovered.

1963/4.
Magnetometer survey by [1] led to excavation of one kiln, oval updraught, 1.5m x 0.8m (5' x 2'9") (internally at 0.3m (12") deep).
Clay walls 0.21m to 0.22m (8 to 9") thick stood to 0.5m (21") at south end, their top at 0.3m (12") deep.
No kiln furniture but stoke hole at north end was excavated for 2.1m (7') from kiln flue, a maximum depth 1.5m (5') below ground level.
Kiln sampled for magnetic dating.
Clinker from smelting and fragments of iron nearby.
Pottery included 11th to 12th century Thetford storage jars and spouted pitchers.
Other sites not fully excavated yielded hard paler pottery with wavey combed designs, plain round bottomed pot, 3 handles pitcher and 2 handles costrel.
