Summary

This is an undated pond that has previously been mistaken for an enclosure in which St Mary's church once stood. St Mary's church probably stood at NHER 14436 or NHER 19347.

Civil Parish CONGHAM, WEST NORFOLK, NORFOLK

Map

Remains of church in this enclosure. (Marks small enclosure shown on (S1) as projecting into two fields).
R. R. Clarke (NCM).

(S2) says church consolidated to St Andrew's 1684, dilapidated 1806. However (S3) states that he visited the site 30 July 1981 and found the 'enclosure' to be a deep pond. He believes the site of St Mary's is NHER 14436. (S4) shows a pond surrounding one end of the enclosures, but (S3) believes the water is too deep for recent flooding.
E. Rose (NAU), 31 July 1981.

[1] however believes site NHER 19347 is site of St Mary's which is only just to northeast of this pond.
E. Rose (NAU), 11 July 1983.

Appropriate section from (S3) in file.

(S5) shows the so called enclosure as a pond. There was obviously no thought held by anyone that the site of St Mary's was at this spot. What was reported in (S3) was what is normally called a pond or pit. R. R. Clarke (NCM) probably mislocated his mark on the NCM map.
See copy of (S5) in file.
A. Rogerson (NLA), 21 April 2001.
