Full Description
1970. Stray Find.
From a probable cesspit at about 25ft [7.6m] deep.
Two complete medieval pots and sherds of a third.
Sherds are from an Italian Tin-glazed Earthenware jar. Initially identified as a Maiolica pot of 15th-century date but apparently subsequently reidentified as early 14th century and from the Ovieto area. See drawing (S1).
The two complete pots are Spanish imports (Merida-type ware) that were originally recorded as being of 15th-century date, although it should this was when they were believed to have been found with a Maiolica vessel of this date. See photograph (S2) and drawings (S3) and (S4).
Finds held by NCM (NWHCM : 1971.147 and NWHCM : 1972.648).
