July 2004. Norfolk NMP.
Wreck partly visible above sea level on RAF aerial photographs taken at low tide (S2). It is most likely that this of the wreck of HMS Dungeness which run aground on 15 November 1940 after being attacked by an enemy aircraft. The bow and part of port side are visible as well as parts of the centre and probably the stern of the vessel. It is aligned north to south with the bow towards the south. The length of the visible remains is 34m. The actual length of the vessel is 38.1m (125ft) (S3). It was not possible to rectify the aerial photograph during NMP mapping and the wreck has been located at the grid reference cited in (S1) TG 38853 30956. However, the unrectified aerial photograph suggests that the wreck could lie 40m further to the north. Full details of the vessel, with wreck location in degrees, are recorded in (S3) where it is referred to as HM Trawler Dungeness.
J. Albone (NMP), 15 July 2004.
