Summary

A World War Two enclosure and associated features are visible on aerial photographs taken in 1946. The enclosure was probably defined by barbed wire obstructions and contained at least two gun emplacements, zigzag trenches, linear ditches and possible structures. To the south of the enclosure was a small banked enclosure.

June 2003. Norfolk NMP.
World War Two military earthworks of two probable gun emplacements and associated trenches, within an irregular enclosure, are visible on RAF aerial photographs from 1946 (S1 to S3). The remains of these features are also just able to be determined on later images; such as RAF 1955 (S4) and BKS 1988 (S5) aerial photographs.
The two gun emplacements are approximately circular and are located at NGRs TG1640 4206 and TG1639 4200. The more southerly one is smaller than the other and leading off from its southern edge appears to be two zigzagging trenches. One of these trenches initially heads south and then starts to curve to the west and then north, while the other trench heads east and then changes overall direction to head north. Both of these trenches appear to consist of a ditch and a slight bank. The first, western trench is about 45m in length and there appears to be a small circular earthwork at its western end, at NGR TG1637 4201 (possibly a small additional gun emplacement). The second one is about 30m long. There appears to be further trenches heading north from the second trench towards the other gun emplacement. It is possible that these trenches join up, but that is not clear on the photographs. There also appears to be another possible gun emplacement or structure at this point TG1641 4202. However, this is not certain as the ground seems really disturbed at this point on the aerial photographs and nothing is overly clear. A further short length of trench heads southeast from the northernmost gun emplacement. It is about 15m in length and at its other end there appears to be yet another small approximately circular earthwork.
The irregular enclosure around the outside of it all is approximately 135m by 130m, and consists of a likely barbed wire obstruction. There are other possible features within this area. These consist of two linear ditches at right angles to each other on the north eastern side of the area (within the outer enclosure). There are also some potential structures dotted about within this general area, these have been plotted, but their purpose is uncertain.
Outside the enclosure to the south, at NGR TG1634 4196, there is a further earthwork. This takes the form of a rectangular embankment, with a lower (ground level) area in the centre. It is about 10m by 12m in size.
H. Clare (NMP), 30 June 2003.
