Summary

Nine evaluation trenches were excavated here in 1999. These exposed the remains of an infilled hollow way of unknown date, an undated post-hole and a post-medieval or modern gully. The hollow way is also visible as an earthwork on an aerial photograph of the area taken in 1993 and had previously been observed in a trench excavated to the south (NHER 9315). Finds from the excavation were limited to two Neolithic flints recovered from a spoil heap.

Map

May-July 1999. Trial Trenching.
Excavation of nine trenches (Trench 23-28, 37 and 39).
Two of the trenches revealed sections of an infilled hollow way. This feature cut through riverine alluvium and was partially filled with a band of crushed chalk make up. This route way is shown on Faden's map of 1797 (S1) and had been identified to the south of this site in a trench excavated in 1965 (NHER 9315). No dating evidence was recovered.
An undated posthole, a gully of probable post-medieval or modern date and a natural features were the only other features present in these trenches. Two Neolithic worked flints were recovered from a spoil heap.
See reports (S2) and (S3) for further details. The results of this work are also summarised in (S4).
An archive associated with this work has been deposited with Norwich Castle Museum (NWHCM : 2022.253).
E. Rose (NLA) 29 June 1999. Amended by P. Watkins (HES), 19 March 2013 and 5 December 2022.

February 2001. Aerial photography interpretation.
Line of hollow way (as predicted through excavation 1999) appears to be in evidence on the photographs. Seen as a slight earthwork (narrow lane/ditch) and quite faint.
(Also due to flooding of River Yare part of area is underwater).
Information from (S5).
