Summary

In 1999 a number of small pits or post holes were noted at this site during the construction of a tennis court. All the archaeological finds were of 19th century or later date and these comprised roofing tiles, pottery sherds, animal bones and shell fragments.

June 1999. Grass field to west of St Edmund's churchyard. Converted to tennis court by mechanical excavation of scarp into East edges, sloping down to 2m+ and dumping on west part.
Natural degraded chalk mark with numerous solution pipes and other yellow brown clay and clay loam filled features.
[1] saw and photographed several features at an earlier stage which may have been post-holes. A. Rogerson (NLA) saw several possible archaeological small pits/post-holes. Heaps examined for finds, all 19th century or recent.

Site field walked on two occasions following A. Rogerson's (NLA) visit. No significant finds made.
Post medieval and late post medieval roofing tiles and sherds, coal, animal bone, mollusca, chip of granite, malting kiln floor tile fragment.
