NHER 34644 (Monument record) - World War Two pillbox or gun emplacement

A World War Two pillbox or gun emplacement is visible on aerial photographs (S1-S3). The grid reference for this pillbox has been corrected from TG 3856 1945 to TG 3857 1945. This structure has an octagonal plan and measures approximately 8m across. It is overgrown with vegetation on most of the available aerial photographs an it is not clearly visible. However, its octagonal plan, dimensions and location suggest that it is possibly a Type 27/8 pillbox. This type of pillbox was specifically used for airfield defence and contained a central light anti aircraft gun well. This feature was not visible on the aerial photographs. The pillbox was probably constructed as part of the defences for Ludham airfield (NHER 8456) but was not present on aerial photographs dating to September 1942 (S4). It is unlikely to be a searchlight position as suggested above, but may be some other type of gun emplacement. It is possible that this structure still survives.
