Summary

In 1955 ploughing in this area revealed a wall, which was excavated by local amateurs. A pit containing human skeletons was discovered near the wall, which was believed to be a chapel. Local reports suggest that one skull was sent to 'a museum in London', and the rest were reburied. A buckle which was also recovered during this excavation was given to Wisbech Museum.

Map

1955. Corner of Thurland Drove and March Riverside (Formerly Cambridge).
Ploughing revealed wall. [1], [2].
Informants and local schoolmaster excavated and found the wall and a pit containing human skeletons. He was under the impression it was said to be a chapel (compare site 25840). One skull was sent to 'a museum in London', the rest reburied. A buckle was given to Wisbech Museum. Informant believes that the 'hut circles' referred to under site NHER 28113 are a misunderstanding of this excavation, put at the wrong end of the drove. Wisbech Museum confirm 1999 they have the buckle, but do not know its date.
