Summary

An early 18th century red brick façade conceals the remains of a much earlier building. To the rear of the building two bays bear evidence of a medieval ground-floor undercroft. This medieval building was extended in the 16th or 17th century and is now hidden by the early 18th century street frontage.

Two bays remain of an early medieval ground floor undercroft, similar to that at the Town Hall (NHER 5480). This is represented by a pair of arches in the east wall. Building extended to the north in the 16th or 17th century using much medieval ecclesiastical masonry. Street block constructed at some later, pre-18th century date, of which only the east wall remains; facade, and remainder of building, rebuilt about 1700.
Interior gutted and base of facade removed in 19th century.
The evidence suggests that the earliest remains are those of a merchant's house perhaps dating from the 13th or 14th century with vaulted ground floor storerooms.
