Map

August-September 1999. Metal detecting.
Identified by H.M. Geake (NCM).
Medieval 'dog's-head' spout made from cast copper alloy. The dog has big upright rounded ears; there is a crest running between the ears towards the nose, and both this and the eyebrows are transversely nicked. The jaws are open and hold the end of the spout. The eyes are long and almost lozenge-shaped. Originally made in one piece and brazed on to the body of a lidded pedestal-base ewer (see Finds Research Group Datasheet 7, figure 8A). The attachment end of the spout (the dog's neck) is made long and curving to provide good adhesion, but despite this they seem often to have come off and got lost. 15th century.
A. Rogerson (NLA), 13 October 1999.
