Summary

This quarry was subject to multiple phases of archaeological work between 2000 and 2015, although this has revealed only limited evidence for past activity on the site. The monitoring of topsoil stripping prior to each phase of aggregate extraction identified a small number of archaeologically significant features, the most notable of which were two Iron Age pits. Other remains were limited to an undated pit and two ditches of probable post-medieval date. Unstratified finds recovered include Early Neolithic and undiagnostic Late Prehistoric worked flints, medieval and post-medieval pottery sherds, a cluster of post-medieval roof tiles and a small number of predominantly post-medieval and modern metal objects.

See report (S1) for further details. The results of this work are also summarised in (S2).
D. Gurney (NLA), 18 October 2000. Amended by P. Watkins (HES), 20 April 2015.

September 2001. Watching Brief.
Monitoring of topsoil stripping at Punch Farm Quarry (Phase 2). Contexts 50 to 51.

D. Gurney (NLA), 12 February 2002. Amended by P. Watkins (HES), 20 April 2015.

October 2004. Fieldwalking and Metal-detecting Survey and Watching Brief.
Field survey and subsequent monitoring of topsoil stripping at Punch Farm Quarry (Phase 3a). Contexts 60-71 used.
No finds recovered during field survey, largely as ground had not been recently plough, resulting in very poor visibility.
Topsoil stripping revealed a small undated pit. Post-medieval metal finds were also recovered.
See report (S5) for further details.
The associated archive has been deposited with the Norwich Castle Museum (NWHCM : 2016.182).
J. Allen (NLA), 29 March 2005. Amended by P. Watkins (HES), 20 April 2015 and 21 June 2019.

May 2005. Watching Brief.
Monitoring of topsoil stripping at Punch Farm Quarry (Phase 3b). Context 72 used.
No archaeological features were observed.
Prehistoric worked flint, medieval pottery and medieval/post medieval objects were found.
See report (S6) for further details.
J. Allen, 2 October 2006. Amended by P. Watkins (HES), 20 April 2015.

October 2006. Watching Brief.
Monitoring of topsoil stripping at Punch Farm Quarry (Phase 4a). Context 73-74 used.
Undated ditch, possibly post-medieval.
No report issued for this phase of work. Report (S7), produced following the 2015 work, suggests that all of the Phase 4 area was stripped in 2010 but this would appear to be an error.
J. Allen (NLA), 18 October 2006. Amended by P. Watkins (HES), 20 April 2015.

June-July 2010. Watching Brief.
Monitoring of topsoil stripping prior to aggregate extraction (Phase 4b).
No archaeologically significant features or deposits were identified in this part of the site.
Unstratified finds recovered included a small number of prehistoric worked flints and a medieval buckle.
See report (S7) for further details.
P. Watkins (HES), 31 January 2018.

May 2015. Watching Brief.
Monitoring of topsoil stripping prior to aggregate extraction (Phase 5).
This final phase of work revealed two Iron Age pits and a ditch of probable post-medieval date. The first of the Iron Age pits was a sub-square, flat-based feature with a dark brown charcoal-fleck filled. This feature produced a significant assemblage of Middle Iron Age pottery that appeared to represent the best part of two vessels. The second pit lay approximately 50m to the north-west and was a shallow ovoid feature that produced several sherds of Middle Iron Age pottery and a small amount of fired clay.
The ditch was aligned north-north-west to south-south-east and produced two Iron Age pottery sherds and several post-medieval pantile fragments. This feature faded out in the northern part of the site.
No unstratified finds were recovered during this phase of work.
See report (S7) for further details.
The archive associated with this work has been deposited with the Norwich Castle Museum (NWHCM : 2017.355).
P. Watkins (HES), 31 January 2018. Amended 27 May 2019.
