NHER 35378 (Cropmark and Earthwork record) - Olivers Green medieval moat and other earthworks

Earthworks of a probable medieval moat and associated enclosures are visible on aerial photographs dating to 1945 (S1). The central grid reference for this site has been amended from TM 3201 9198 to TM 3205 9195. The main moated enclosure lies at the southeast corner of the group of earthworks at TM 3208 9193. It is trapezoidal in plan and with internal dimensions of 41m by 27m. The ditches, which are up to 4.5m wide, continue the alignment of extant boundaries at Olivers Green immediately to the southeast. Adjoining the western side of the main moat is a smaller sub-rectangular enclosure that measures 31m by 10m internally. Further earthworks of ditches are present leading to the north and west of this enclosure. One of these is up to 5m wide and joins on to a sub-circular pond. The pond is still marked on the current 1:10000 Ordnance Survey map and is the only part of this complex to survive. The field containing these earthworks had been ploughed and the earthworks levelled by 1984 (S2). It is likely that these earthworks are of medieval date and that they relate to Olivers Green immediately to their southeast. This site fell within the scope of a trial trenching evaluation undertaken in 2004-5 (NHER 40213). Pottery of 13th to 17th century date was recovered from pits to the west of the moat earthworks supporting their interpreted date. Although trial trenches crossing the moat itself were planned, it appears that these were not excavated (S3). Further earthworks of medieval to post medieval date are present 200m to the east (NHER 43765).
