Summary

Assessment of the aerial photographs and historic maps for this site have revealed that a ring ditch formerly identified on the aerial photographs at this location actually represents the remains of a former pit and/or pond that is marked on the Ordnance Survey 1st edition map (1889 - 1891, 6 inch) and is still extant as late as 1946, as shown by the RAF aerial photography.The feature has been levelled by 1968 and can also be seen as a cropmark on the 2006 Google Earth layer.

Assessment of the aerial photographs and historic maps for this site have revealed that this apparent ring ditch actually represents the remains of a former pit and/or pond that is marked on the Ordnance Survey 1st edition map (1889 - 1891, 6 inch) (S1) and is still extant as late as 1946, as shown by the RAF aerial photography (S2).

June 2023. Wendling Beck and Fransham Aerial Investigation and Mapping (AIM) Project.
The former post medieval pit or pond (discussed above) can be seen as an earthwork on the 1940s (S3) aerial photographs. The feature has been levelled by 1968 (S4) and can also be seen as a cropmark on the 2006 Google Earth layer (S5). The monument polygon has been updated to the location of the feature as seen on S5.
