Summary

This is the site of a group of several brick kilns shown on mid 19th century maps. They were flattened at the time of the conversion of Mousehold Heath to a public park in 1880s, and the area now forms a sports ground with a fountain and bandstand. Some of the pits in the woods around probably belong to the brick kiln activity.

Map

Fountain Sports Ground.
Site of group of several brick kilns shown on mid 19th century maps (S1) and (S2). Flattened at time of conversion of Mousehold Heath to public park in 1880s to form sports ground with fountain and bandstand brought from Castle Gardens - since replaced. Some of the pits in the woods around probably belong to the kiln site. It is noteworthy that these kilns are not shown on a map of 1888 (S1), surveyed in 1884, whereas those at Gilman Road are shown on the earlier map of 1883 (S2), suggesting that the laying out of the heath took place in 1883-1884.
