Map

Former shooting butts.
Massive earth butts, over 20 feet (6.1m) hight, set up at some date prior to 1863 when a published print showed the officers of the Norfolk Volunteers in front of it. The maximum 800 yard (731m) firing point was east of Mousehold Lane. Small earth banks that enclosed the target area run east.
The map of 1888 (S1) shows two other small banks to the west. One of these is shown on map of 1961 (S2) as 'old butts' - this is said to have been a World War Two butts, of which almost all trace has gone.

July 2010. Norfolk NMP.
Some elements of the post medieval rifle range is visible on aerial photographs (S3-S6), although the site is greatly overlain by structures and earthworks relating to World War Two activity on the site (NHER 54282). The site has been extended to include the full extent of the rifle range as depicted on the Ordnance Survey First Edition map (1889 to 1891) (S7) and is now centred on TG 2492 0995.
The outline of the shooting banks mapped at the western end is somewhat conjectural, as they were degraded and overgrown by the date of the 1940s photography (S5). The larger N-S bank was considerably more pronounced and higher than the flanking E-W bank. No clear sign of a second flanking E-W bank to south, as mentioned in the above entry, was visible. One or more possible intermediate firing positions, potentially 50yds or 100yds, is visible at approximately TG 2464 0993 in 1917 (S3-S4).
S. Horlock (NMP), 01 July 2010.
