Summary

This is the site of eight brick kilns and a deep well, shown on first editon OS map (S1). There were also extensive clay pits at the rear. When Mousehold Heath was made into a public park in the 1880s the kilns were covered by a raised platform of earth which became a hockey ground. This was turned into allotments during World War Two and is now football fields.

Map

Gurney Road Playing Fields
Site of eight brick kilns and a deep well, shown on first editon OS map (S1); extensive clay puts at rear. When Mousehold Heath was made into a public park in the 1880s the kilns were covered by a raised platform of earth which became a hockey ground (turned into allotments during World War Two and now football fields). Note; the map (S1) was surveyed 1880 and published 1884. The adjacent map was surveyed 1883, and shows the kilns at the Fountain Ground as gone. This may suggest Mousehold Heath was laid out between 1881 and 1883.
