Full Description
2 May 1972. OS aerial photography (S1).
Positive cropmarks. Possible ring ditch.
Very broad outer ditch with rather irregular inner ditch. Hengiform? Pond? Who knows?
Much the same image is visible on the RAF 1946 photos.
D. Voisey, 5 January 1996.
January 2007. Norfolk NMP.
NMP mapping has led to the alteration of the central grid reference of the site from TG 3244 2659 to TG 3245 2659.
The ‘ring ditch’ described above is visible as crop- and vegetation marks, and perhaps as slight earthworks, on aerial photographs (S1)-(S3). Its date and function are unclear. Its low-lying position on a floodplain would suggest that it is unlikely to represent a prehistoric monument. It most resembles a World War Two searchlight emplacement, but a feature of that period might be expected to have a ‘fresher’ appearance on aerial photographs taken in 1946 (S2). Interpretations as a post medieval pond (used for wild fowling?) or mill mound seem plausible but there is too little evidence for this to be anything more than speculation. The feature could even be of entirely natural or agricultural origin.
The form of the site is unclear, as the crop/vegetation marks are reversed on the 1972 photographs (S1), and it is therefore possible that the bank elements may instead be ditches and vice versa. It is roughly circular in plan, the outer bank measuring 43.5m in diameter, the interior of the inner bank 14m. No earthwork traces of the site are visible on aerial photographs taken in 1995 (S4).
S. Tremlett (NMP), 4 January 2006.
