Summary

Metal detecting and fieldwalking between 2000 and 2004 recovered a number of objects from the Roman to post medieval periods. This includes a number of objects from the Saxon period, including pottery sherds and a stirrup. Other finds include medieval and Roman pottery sherds, and a medieval seal matrix. The number of objects recovered from this area dating to the medieval period is thought to indicate the presence of a possible medieval settlement.

Map

January to April 2000. Metal detecting.
H.M. Geake (A&E) identified:
Late Saxon stirrup mount of William's Class A, Type 1. Made of cast copper alloy, it is roughly pentagonal in shape. It has been broken though a rivet hole at the apex and a replacement hole has been drilled beneath, which is now blocked by an iron rivet. The mount is decorated with two outward-curving animal heads, boldly but not particularly well executed with oval eyes and upturned noses, open jaws and long curling pigtails or "lappets". The noses and lappets project as knops. The engraving is in good condition and is filled with an inlay, now a darkish green but perhaps originally niello (black silver sulphide). On the reverse at the base is a short flange with two rivet holes above it, both filled with iron rivets.
Max width 34mm, surviving length 52mm. 11th century.
