Full Description
2000. Field observation.
Linear ditch. At its widest 20 feet, 6 feet deep. 1810 Enclosure map follows the line.
J. Allen (NLA), October 2000.
The central grid reference has been altered from TM 4592 9450 to TM 4593 9409.
August 2006. Norfolk NMP.
The aerial photographs show the northern continuation of the earthwork identified within the wood. The hollow appears to be approximately 5m wide at this point and flanked to the north by a bank (S2-S3). The 1810 Enclosure map refers to the land to the east of this boundary as ‘Church Plantation’ (S1) and it seems likely that this earthwork is a woodland boundary. To the immediate east of this boundary is an L-shaped bank or scarped edge, with a ditch or broad hollow running along the outer edge. It is possible that this earthwork can be seen continuing to the east in 1945 (S2), although this was not certain and was not mapped. It seems likely that these earthworks also relate to post medieval land division and possibly, in the case of the hollow, drainage. The site is centred on TM 4593 9409, although this point does not correspond to an archaeological feature on the ground.
S. Massey (NMP), 17 August 2006.
