Summary

Metal detecting in 2000 recovered an elaborate Roman Dolphin brooch with fine cast decoration on its bow and wings.

Before 31 October 2000. Metal detecting.
Roman Ae elaborate Dolphin brroch, fine cast decoration on bow and wings. Bow has central ovoid boss with deep circular setting and prominent longitudinal ridge which comes to a point above and below boss, and expands at foot, ridge is flanked by two less pronounced sinuous lines on sides of bow. Catch plate on reverse has incised zig-zagline on back. Each wing has a similar ovoid setting to that on bow and transverse concave moulding. Wings have solid ends and fully enclosed axis-bar with cruciform opening, pin missing.
Brooch of dimensions 36 x 52mm.
