Summary

Excavation on this site in 2001 confirmed cartographic evidence which suggested that the earliest human settlement and/or industrial activity occurred around the mid post-medieval period in this area of Norwich. Radiocarbon dating of peat deposits indicates a cessation of peat growth in the Late Saxon period, and a change to more watery conditions which persisted into the post medieval period. During this time the area may have been utilised for pasture. Mortar floor surfaces, probably associated with either an iron foundary or the Hills and Underwood vinegar factory, known to have been located in the area in the late 18th century, were recorded.
