Full Description
April 2001. Air Photo Interpretation.
NLA air photography 19 July 1994.
Photographs show cropmarks inside Blickling Hall, east of church.
A rectilinear enclosure with internal sub-dividing ditches and associated linear features.
It is possible that the enclosure is related to the Roman greyware findspot (NHER 31651). Although it may relate to later park features (NHER 30433), or pre-park fields relating to the hollow way (NHER 31289).
S. Massey (NLA), 18 April 2001.
March 2023. Aylsham and Brampton Aerial Investigation and Mapping (AIM) Project.
The cropmarks of a previously recorded rectilinear enclosure and a series of linear ditches (see above) of an unknown date are seen as cropmarks on aerial photographs (S1-S4). The date of the features is unknown, and it is uncertain as to whether the features are contemporary or relate to multiple phases. It has been previously suggested (see above) that the enclosure may date to the Roman period, as pottery of this date has been recovered from its vicinity (NHER 31651). Whilst this is possible, it is perhaps more likely that the features relate to medieval to post-medieval field boundaries and enclosures associated with the pre-parkland landscape, as their morphology is similar to other such features recorded further to the north (NHER 36416). Equally, it is possible that the features represent elements of the post-medieval park (NHER 30433). For further discussion see (S5).
The extent of this record has been amended to more accurately reflect the extent of the enclosure and ditches [1].
