Full Description
19 July 1996. NLA air photography.
Cropmarks of a medieval field system, consistent with the existing fields to the north and south (those not affected by the Longham airfield NHER 7275).
The eastern field boundary represents the mapped parish boundary.
The trackway is a continuation of Herne Lane, at the eastern end of which is sub-rectangular enclosure. The trackway also widens at this point.
Cropmarks of ridge and furrow are visible in the fields to the north.
It is clear from the Ordnance Survey 6" (1958) map that Herne Lane was utilised as part of the airfield, this may account for the widening of the track. Although it may have been an original feature.
S. Massey (NLA), 25 April 2001.
February 2024. Wendling Beck and Fransham Aerial Investigation and Mapping (AIM) Project.
The cropmarks of field boundaries and a subrectangular enclosure (see above) of a medieval to post medieval date are seen on aerial photographs (S1-S5). The features likely formed part of a wider field system and may have related to multiple phases. The majority of the field boundaries and the trackway visible on the aerial photographs are recorded in good detail on the Ordnance Survey 1st edition 6" map (S6). As these features are recorded in good detail on the readily accessible historic maps, they have not been mapped as part of this project. It is possible that the field boundaries and the subrectangular enclosure which have been mapped by the project, could be earlier in date and may have related to a different phase to the field boundaries recorded on S6. A number of cropmark pit features are also visible across the area. These features correspond with ponds or former extractive pits recorded on the Ordnance Survey 1st edition 6" map and have therefore not been mapped. The monument polygon has been updated to the extent of the features as seen on S1 and S5.
