Full Description
1998. Desk-based Assessment.
Assessment of the site's likely archaeological potential. This survey was the first part of a community archaeology project that sought to enhance public awareness and understanding of the historic environment in Great Yarmouth.
See report (S1) for further details.
P. Watkins (HES), 5 May 2015.
July-August 2001. Community Excavation.
Project undertaken by the Norfolk Museum Service in partnership with Norfolk Archaeological Unit and Great Yarmouth Archaeological Society.
Evidence of occupation in the 16th century followed by a period of disuse and soil build-up, and the the building of a 'town house', probably in the seventeenth century. At some point the house was extended and the yard landscaped into gardens. House demolished around 1860, when a malt house covered the site. Taken down during redevelopment in 1960.
See report (S2) for further details. The results of this work are also summarised in (S3) and (S4). See also newspaper article (S5).
An archive associated with this work has been deposited with Norwich Castle Museum (NWHCM : 2022.267).
J. Allen (NLA), 16 October 2003. Amended by P. Watkins (HES), 21 April 2015 and 5 December 2022.
2001. Found during excavation.
Post medieval jetton, Hans Schulter.
See list in file.
K. Hinds (NLA), 18 July 2001.
September 2003.
The excavated site is surrounded by walls 2m high, which are the remnants of the row of houses and maltings formerly on this site. These are a complicated mixture of brickwork, apparently all 18th and 19th century, with many blocked openings. No attempt was made to interpret these due to the difficulty caused by dumps of rubbish and plant growth. The walls are to be restored and retained when the area becomes a public garden.
See (S2).
E. Rose (NLA), 5 September 2003.
