Summary

A community excavation, organised by the Norfolk Archaeological Unit and Great Yarmouth Museum, in 2001 revealed the complex development of a site on 'Row 117'. The site was occupied from the 16th century, and after a period of disuse, a house was built on the site in the 17th century. The house was extended, and a small garden was created with a formal entrance from 'Row 112'. The house was demolished in about 1860, and a malthouse was built on the site. The malthouse was demolished in the 1960s. A 16th century Nuremburg jetton was found during the excavation.

Evidence of occupation in the 16th century followed by a period of disuse and soil build-up, and the the building of a 'town house', probably in the seventeenth century. At some point the house was extended and the yard landscaped into gardens. House demolished around 1860, when a malt house covered the site. Taken down during redevelopment in 1960.

K. Hinds (NLA), 18 July 2001.

September 2003.
The excavated site is surrounded by walls 2m high, which are the remnants of the row of houses and maltings formerly on this site. These are a complicated mixture of brickwork, apparently all 18th and 19th century, with many blocked openings. No attempt was made to interpret these due to the difficulty caused by dumps of rubbish and plant growth. The walls are to be restored and retained when the area becomes a public garden.
See (S2).
