Summary

Aerial photography from 1996 record the cropmarks of two partial rectilinear enclosures, several linear features, a number of drains and a possible trackway. Some of these features are visible as earthworks on 1946 RAF vertical aerial photographs and are likely to relate to post-medieval drainage and field boundaries.

Civil Parish WHINBURGH AND WESTFIELD, BRECKLAND, NORFOLK

Map

15 July 1996. NLA aerial photography.
Cropmarks showing what appear to be two partial rectilinear enclosures. Several other linear features have right-angled turns along their course, these may also be sections of addititional enclosures.
At least two of these linears are parallel and closely set and may be a track.
The field appears to be traversed with drains, it is possible that some of the linears are drainage.

The southernmost of these features are visible as earthworks on 1946 RAF aerial photographs (S2). It is likely that these features and some of the linear features visible on (S1) in fact relate to post-medieval drainage. The curvilinear feature running approximately east-west to the south of this site is certainly a field boundary which was ploughed out after 1946.
