August 2006. Norfolk NMP.
The cropmarks of a large group of medieval to post medieval field boundaries and enclosures are visible on aerial photographs to the north of the Shrublands, Burgh St Peter (S1-S3). The site is centred on TM 4739 9305. The majority of these field boundaries have been removed by the time 1842 Tithe map was surveyed (S4). No enclosure map was available for consultation at the time of mapping, although it seems likely that these boundaries represent piecemeal pre-parliamentary enclosure. The sinuous nature of the central strip or wide trackway, running from TM 4695 9291 to TM 4721 9298, would suggest that at least some of these boundaries reflect the medieval field layout. The line of this boundary is continued to the east on the 1842 Burgh St Peter Tithe map (S4). To the north and south of this sinuous central boundary feature are two large areas of land that has been subdivided into large rectangular plots, up to 90m across. These are likely to represent fields or areas of grazing and the southern boundaries are possibly associated with the post medieval farm, Shrublands Farm, to the immediate south. The cropmarks of seemingly post medieval field boundaries to the north of Staithe Road are also recorded under this site.
S. Massey (NMP), 09 August 2006.
