Civil Parish HEDENHAM, SOUTH NORFOLK, NORFOLK

Map

2 July 1996. NLA air photography.
Cropmarks show an angular ovoid enclosure around the church.
Excavations at NHER 31225 suggest churchyard was once more extensive. It is likely that this enclosure is the original boundary of the churchyard.
Several rectilinear elements adjoin the boundary, also a trackway appears to lead to the church enclosure.

Cropmarks of linear and curvilinear ditches, probably field boundaries of unknown and medieval to post medieval date, are visible on aerial photographs (S1-S2). The central grid reference for these cropmarks has been amended from TM 3134 9342 to TM 3132 9351. A large number of cross-cutting linear and curvilinear ditch cropmarks are present. Most of these have alignments that do not correspond to the modern field pattern and are of unknown date. The oval enclosure previously identified around the church is actually formed by separate sections of ditch cropmark that may not be associated with each other. It is possible that these cropmarks do relate to an enclosure around, or predating, the church. Alternatively they may represent separate features of different dates. A curvilinear ditch, possibly also part of an incomplete enclosure is present in the southeast part of the group. Other ditch cropmarks on north to south, west to east and southwest to northeast alignments appear to conform to the current field pattern. It is likely that these are of post medieval or medieval date, but they are not marked on the 1839 Ditchingham tithe map (S3). Other field boundary cropmarks that were shown on this map were not mapped. These include a partly double-ditched field boundary leading towards the church that was previously interpreted as a possible trackway.
