Full Description
28 June 1996. NLA air photography.
Structures visible surrounded by high walls and defended by 2, possibly 3, pillboxes, see NHER 13090 and NHER 16786.
The high walls indicate it may have been a radar station, and the walls channel the signal.
Identified by E. Rose (NLA).
S. Massey (NLA), 14 September 2001.
20 June 2013.
Site visit and part digital photo record. Photos taken from east to west and back again. The site entrance now blocked by an earth bank, and the site strewn with gas cylinders. Two pillboxes evident (NHERs 13090 and 16786 (relocated)). I think it unlikely that the high walls referred to above were intended to channel radar signals, but there are a number of tapered concrete bases towards the west end of the site with iron fittings on their tops, and I wonder if these were anchoring points for masts. Most if not all of the buildings still evident on site, albeit ruinous, can be seen on the 1946 air photos.
D. Gurney (HES), 24 June 2013.
29 July 2013.
Known locally as the "old radio station". There were large masts secured by concrete stanchions and wooden accommodation huts encased within the brick wals (S1). I wonder if this was a site similar to NHER 38977?
D. Gurney (HES), 29 July 2013.
