Full Description
26 June 1996. NLA aerial photography.
Cropmarks of a square enclosure located in Oulton Airfield.
The enclosure appears to have two opposed entrances, although the one to the northwest may be due to geological disturbance. The fact that the site appears to be on a similar alignment to the road and elements of the airfield could suggest a relatively recent, possibly World War Two, date. However, the morphology of the enclosure would indicate that it is likely to be Roman in date.

March 2022. Aylsham and Brampton Aerial Investigation and Mapping (AIM) Project.
The cropmarks of a possible Iron Age to Roman rectilinear enclosure (see above) can be seen on aerial photographs (S1-S3). It is possible that the feature may relate to Second World War activity at Oulton Airfield. However, the feature was not seen on the consulted 1940s aerial photographs covering the airfield, which, along with the features morphology, may suggest an Iron-Age to Roman date. The west of the enclosure appears to be masked by a large geological cropmark. A possible entrance is visible in the south of the enclosure. As previously mentioned, (see above) a second entrance may be seen on the opposite northern side of the enclosure, however, this may be the product of geological cropmarks.
