Full Description
18 July 1996. NLA aerial photography.
Potential negative features located to the north of Church Farm were observed in an aerial photograph.
The features could be the remains of buildings of unknown date.
M. Brennand (NLA) 3 December 2001.
September 2007. Norfolk NMP.
The cropmarks of a rectangular pit or possibly of the remains of a sunken-floored building may be visible on aerial photographs to the north of Ringland village (S1). The site is centred on TG 1354 1418. Other cropmarks previously noted on these photographs would appear to coincide with a boundary or track marked on the Ordnance Survey first edition map (1887-1891, 25 inch) (S2).
The archaeological nature of the cropmark is uncertain and it is possible that the feature is geological in origin, as a number of rectilinear geological features are visible within this field on the aerial photograph. If the feature is archaeological then the most likely explanation is that is a pit or small extraction site. It is possible that it represents the remains of a structure, possibly with a sunken floor, however this seems relatively unlikely given the clarity of the cropmarks and the density of geological and extraction cropmarks noted in this area.
S. Massey (NMP), 12 September 2007.
