Summary

In 1970 a Bronze Age socketed axehead was found by chance at this location. In 2022 fieldwork undertaken as part of the 'The Past is All Around Us' project saw a survey of molehills in the northern half of the field and the excavation of two test pits. Finds recovered during this work included medieval, medieval/post-medieval and post-medieval pottery sherds; a medieval/post-medieval brick fragment; post-medieval floor tiles; a medieval/post-medieval stone roof tile and post-medieval clay tobacco pipe fragments.

Found on land which was formerly allotments:
Bronze Age copper alloy socketed axehead, virtually octagonal, facets decorated with raised ribs not always well distinguishable.
Of exactly same type as Watton hoard and almost certainly from the same workshop.
Length 102mm, Width, 47mm.

Molehills in northern part of field examined as part of National Lottery Heritage Fund funded 'The Past is All Around Us' project. Finds recovered included:
11 medieval pottery sherds.
1 medieval/post-medieval pottery sherd and 1 Collyweston stone roof tile.
9 post-medieval pottery sherds, 1 glazed pantile fragment and 1 clay tobacco pipe stem.
Modern pottery, nails, glass and ceramic building material were also recovered but not recorded.

30 July 2022. Test Pitting.
Excavation of two test pits as part of National Lottery Heritage Fund funded 'The Past is All Around Us' project (EP1 and EP2). These were both situated in the northernmost part of the field, immediately to the west of the site of a former dwelling shown on the Castle Acre tithe map (S7).
Test Pit EP1 at [3] was dug to a maximum depth of 0.4m without natural geological deposits being reached. Finds recovered included:
4 medieval pottery sherds.
4 post-medieval pottery sherds, 2 pamment floor tiles and 4 clay tobacco pipe fragments.

Test Pit EP2 at [4] was dug to a maximum depth of 0.4m at which point a solid layer of chalk was encountered. It was uncertain whether this was a natural geological deposit or a floor surface. Finds recovered included:
10 medieval pottery sherds.
1 medieval/post-medieval brick fragment and 1 Collyweston stone roof tile.
5 post-medieval pottery sherds and 2 pamment floor tiles.

Modern pottery, nails, glass and ceramic building material were also recovered but not recorded.
